Matt Gaetz, a United States House Representative from Donald Trump's home state Florida, was chosen to be the new US Attorney General in the newly formed Trump administration. The president-elect on Wednesday announced the appointment of Gaetz, sending shockwaves even among the GOP members in the Congress. Gaetz, a conservative lawmaker, is under investigation by a House Ethics Committee over allegations that he was involved in a scheme to traffic a 22-year-old girl, back in June 2024. Despite Gaetz denying the allegations, the committee, in its latest hearing, said that it is looking into allegations that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct, and illicit drug use and accepted improper gifts. There are also allegations that he had sought to obstruct the investigation into the allegations against him. Announcing his appointment, the president-elect said: "“Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department." The Associated Press reported citing a Republican lawmaker who was part of a private meeting where the decision to appoint Gaetz was announced that it sent shockwaves across party members attending. “Everybody was saying, Oh my God,” said GOP House Representative, Mike Simpson of Idaho. "That was about as big a surprise as I’ve had in a long time."Also read: “I have a really hard time believing he could get through the Senate confirmation process,” he said. “You never know.”On Wednesday, after meeting President Biden at the Oval Office to discuss the transition, the 78-year-old made several swift appointments to fill his administration. Along with Gaetz for Attorney General, Trump also named Marco Rubio as the Secretary of State and Tulsi Gabbard as the Director of National Intelligence.
