Schools in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Tiruvarur have been ordered shut and holiday declared for today - November 20, 2024. The announcement came following heavy rainfall in the area. Keeping the safety of the children in mind, authorities in Tamil Nadu's 5 districts have decided to close the schools today in the area. Schools in Chennai, however, are not closed. Apart from these districts, school holiday has also been announced for today in Kanniyakumari and Pechiparai areas. The areas received incessant rains. The areas received very heavy rainfall on Tuesday night, prompting closure of schools on Wednesday. Earlier, schools in Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi, and Karaikal has declared holiday on November 19 due to rains. Authorities have decided to keep all schools and colleges in these districts closed for today. Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in various parts of Tamil Nadu over the next five days. Weather office has forecast continued rainfall and also predicted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in various parts of the state.Since the onset of the monsoons in late October, Tamil Nadu has witnessed multiple instances of heavy showers and downpour, especially in delta areas. The retreating monsoons have already caused closure of schools in Chennai for over 4 days in the month. It is likely that the school holiday may be extended tomorrow in select districts due to weather. Updates will be made available later in the day.
