Three Lions Fail to Take Down 'Car-Sized' Rhino Using Its Horn to Stab at One

Conventional wisdom suggests that apex predators should be able to take down any animal on which they set their sights. However, even , members of the group-hunting elite, know better than to bite off more than they can chew. When Jordan Davidson, a safari guide in South Africa’s Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, and his tourists, came up on a group of three lions during a recent game drive, they were not expecting much action, despite the presence of a “car-sized” white .The trio, two females and a male, if they behaved like typical lions, would have little to offer beyond a quiet sighting where they lounged during the warm hours in the bush. But, they were ambitious, not afraid to fail, or even almost die by a stab or two of the rhino’s horn, which it wasn’t above using to defend itself.According to a Latest Sightings , the big cats only engaged when the rhino got too close for comfort, entering the space where they were relaxing.“Eventually, the rhino was so close that it made one of the lionesses uncomfortable! She ran off and for good reason, the rhino could see clearly now and already had a defensive stance,” Davidson recalled.“The second lioness had more of an opportunistic eye, as the rhino was chasing her sister away, she went into a pouncing position and waited for her shot. She didn’t have to wait long, as the rhino quickly decided that it would be best to make a U-turn and head the other way.”The lioness took off after the horned beast, from the encounter shows, only to realise that it wouldn’t be the wisest decision and abandoned the chase. Little did she know, the rhino wasn’t going to let it go. The brunt of this interaction, however, was reserved for the lion, who dared to “meet it head-on”.“Without much surprise, the male lion ended up learning the same lesson as the female just before him, but not before the rhino tried stabbing at it, twice! And only missing marginally both times!,” Davidson said.Having been spared by what can only be described as dumb luck, the lion caught on to the fact and ran off into the bushes, with the rhino heading in the opposite direction.

Davidson, who has seven years of experience guiding safaris, admitted it was the one of the “wildest lion and rhino interactions that we’ve seen to an end."
