Waffle House Closing In Tampa Bay, Other Florida Locations Amid Hurricane Milton: Why Is It Important

Send Push

Ahead of the landfall of Hurricane Milton in Florida's Tampa Bay Area on Wednesday, Waffle House, the 24x7 diner on the south coast, announced Tuesday that it is closing its Tampa area locations. They announced the closure of the Tampa Area locations on Tuesday afternoon, 2 p.m. EDT onwards. Notably, Waffle House cited the Waffle House Index to suggest that it reflects a closure is due "in advance" of Hurricane Milton's landfall. Additionally, locations in Lakeland an Naples in Florida were also closed. "Our #whindex status maps reflect our closures as of 2 p.m. today in advance of #HurricaneMilton. More updates to come. Please stay safe," Waffle House wrote on X Tuesday.

Why Is It Important? The Waffle House Index is a reliable indicator of extreme weather events in the southern states and the Gulf Coast where the dining chain works. The 24x7 restaurant is known to remain open even in moderately extreme weather situations, closing down only when huge devastation is anticipated. Locals in areas where Waffle House diners are present treat it as an indicator of safety. If a location is open, people assume that the impending weather event is unlikely to cause much damage. As per the Waffle House Index map available on 1600 + locations of the diner chain, over two dozen locations across Tampa, St. Petersburg, Fort Myers, and Bradenton remain closed. Hurricane Milton is expected to reduce in strength from a Category 4 storm as it makes an expected landfall in Florida's Tampa Area. Despite the reduction in strength, it will continue to be a major hurricane with impact felt across Florida. Most of Florida's west coast has been evacuated amid the hurricane and even the Waffle House Index says that the impact is likely to be severe.
