Who Is Anil Deshmukh?Anil Deshmukh is one of the prominent figures from Maharashtra and a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Born on 9 May 1950, during his career in politics, he has occupied a number of important positions. He was the Maharashtra Home Minister between 2019 and 2021. He introduced several key initiatives including Shakti Bill, a proposal for strengthening sexual offenses-related laws and measures to provide support to police personnel amid COVID-19 pandemic. The political career of Deshmukh was not without controversy. He resigned as Home Minister in 2021 due to serious charges of corruption in the case of extortion and bribery alleged against him by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh. The allegations pertain to a money-laundering case regarding collection of funds from bar owners of Mumbai, which has been allegedly routed through shell companies owned by Deshmukh's family. Deshmukh is the leader of Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). In these assembly elections, Deshmukh's son Salil Deshmukh is contesting from the Katol seat. Anil Deshmukh has been shifted to Alexis hospital in Nagpur city for treatment. What Police Said?The incident took place at around 8 PM. Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police, Harsh Poddar said that Anil Deshmukha was returning from Narkhed to Katol after attending a rally. "At an isolated area on the road, stones were at Anil Deshmukh's car. He received an injury in the incident," Poddar said. Senior officials have rushed to the spot and have begun an investigation into the matter.
