IIT Kanpur vs IIT Kharagpur: Who leads the placement race? A comparative analysis

Two of India's premier institutes for higher education in engineering and technology, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, are dream destinations for many aspiring engineers. In the NIRF Rankings 2024 (engineering category), IIT Kanpur was ranked number 4 while IIT Kharagpur was ranked number 5. In fact, since 2020, both the institutes have found a place in the top 6 of the engineering category. So, what sets these institutes apart? Beyond their distinguished faculty, advanced courses, research facilities, and impressive campuses, one major differentiator is their placement records. Today, we will compare which of these esteemed IITs excels more in terms of placements.


Placement records: A comparative analysis of IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur


So, which institute fares better in terms of placement records? Here’s a look at the data from the last three years for both institutes for UG four year programme, as published by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) under the management category in 2024:

A comparison of placement and higher education trends between IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur for their four-year undergraduate programs reveals key differences over three academic years.

At IIT Kanpur, the number of graduates increased from 773 in 2020-21 to 985 in 2022-23. Placements also rose from 437 to 688, with median salaries climbing from Rs 19.15 lakh to Rs 23 lakh. However, the number of students pursuing higher studies fluctuated, peaking at 299 in 2020-21 before dropping to 165 in 2021-22 and rising to 239 in 2022-23.

IIT Kharagpur saw graduates grow from 425 to 580, and placements increased from 338 to 460, with median salaries rising significantly from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 24 lakh. The number of students opting for higher studies remained more stable, ranging between 30 and 41 students each year.

Both institutes showed improvement in placements and median salaries, but IIT Kanpur had a higher proportion of students opting for higher studies, while IIT Kharagpur had a greater focus on placements.
