Can Josh Jacobs Bounce Back After His Costly Fine and Continue Thriving in Green Bay?

Send Push
Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs was fined $45,020 by the National Football League according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero for unnecessary roughness in the 30-14 victory of his team over the Tennessee Titans during Week 3. The incident took place during a run by Jacobs in the fourth quarter when he lowered his helmet to touch Titans safety Quandre Diggs. Ironically, no flag was thrown in that game on this play.

Additional Fines in Week 3Jacobs was not the only one as players who committed helmet-related infractions were penalized with fines in Week 3. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is one of them who was fined $22,511 when he got tangled up in the first quarter of his team's close 28-25 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Today, there is a theme of maintaining league players' safety with continued checks on the use of helmets in playing.

Rule Origins and Updates

First introduced in 2018, the rule for illegal helmet use has now gained some further details and additions to its parameters with the addition from 2023. A foul has been committed by the player if he lowered his head and made "forcible contact" with his helmet to that of an opponent's and also prohibited the use of a helmet or face mask to hit another person's head or neck. Indirect contact resulting from a legitimate tackle or block is not, however, a foul.

A Record Fine
In most ways, Jacobs' actions merited a call and presumably a penalty; in any case, no such penalty was levied during the course of the game. That, in turn, makes it a salient aspect of this call. Spotrac says officially, the stiff fine stamps Jacobs as the highest single-play fine of the 2024 season to date. According to the fine policy put by the NFL, the following are applicable: A first-time offender of improper helmet use incurs a fine amount of $22,511, while a second offense incurs a fine of $45,020.

Strong Start in Green Bay
Jacobs had spent five seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders but signed a four-year contract worth $48 million with the Packers this March. So far, in three games for Green Bay, Jacobs has indeed been commendable, running for 278 yards on 62 carries.
