NEW DELHI: Assam government on Tuesday revealed its decision to rename Karimganj district of Barak Valley to Sribhumi , as confirmed by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press conference following a state cabinet meeting.
"Over a 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore had described modern day Karimganj District in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’- the land of Maa Lakshmi. Today the Assam Cabinet has fulfilled this long standing demand of our people," Sarma announced on X.
The Chief Minister explained that this renaming initiative aims to align with the local population's wishes and aspirations. He further clarified their ongoing policy, stating that they would continue modifying names lacking historical documentation or dictionary references, describing it as an established, continuous practice.
Additionally, the cabinet announced plans to release the panchayat election voter list by December, with the aim to conclude the electoral process by February 10 next year.
Sarma also shared news about an upcoming investment and infrastructure summit scheduled for February 24, 2025, in Assam, mentioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's acceptance of their invitation to attend.
To promote this global summit, the Assam government plans to conduct roadshows internationally and across various Indian cities in the coming months to attract potential participants.
Himanta also said that over 94 rural development projects also got approval during the cabinet meet.
