As the Union cabinet has recognised the Assamese language as a classical language, the Assam government has announced a week-long program to celebrate this in the first half of November.
The Union Cabinet had approved the conferment of Classical Language status to Assamese, along with Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, and Bengali languages, on October 3.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took his X account and said that the state will observe “Bhasa Gaurob Saptah” from 3rd to 9th November 2024 and throughout this week, universities, schools, and civil society organizations will host events to honor the contributions of Assamese writers and scholars.
"On 3rd October 2024, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi officially recognized Assamese as a Classical Language. To celebrate this historic achievement, Assam will observe “Bhasa Gaurob Saptah”from 3rd to 9th November 2024. Throughout this week, universities, schools, and civil society organizations will host events to honor the contributions of Assamese writers and scholars, whose work has shaped the language since the 4th century AD," Sarma said on a post on X.
"The people of Assam will also express heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji for this significant gesture towards the state's cultural and language heritage," he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's cabinet approved the addition of Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali, and Prakrit to the prestigious category of classical languages.
The classical language category was first created on Oct 12, 2004, when Tamil was declared a classical language. Subsequently, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia were added to the list.
The state cabinet had on October 8 adopted a resolution on behalf of the Assamese government and extended its gratitude to PM Modi over granting Classical Language status to Assamese.
