NEW DELHI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence given to a man named Sunil Kuchkoravi by a Kolhapur court for the murder of his mother in 2017 and allegedly eating some of her body parts.
The division bench, consisting of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan, confirmed the death penalty, saying that this case falls under the "rarest of rare category".
HC said, "The convict not only murdered his mother but he also removed her body parts - brain, heart, liver, kidney, intestine and was cooking them on a pan." The bench further noted that Kuchkoravi had already "cooked her ribs and was about to cook her heart. This is a case of cannibalism ."
The high court expressed concern that if given life imprisonment, the convict might commit a similar crime while in jail, given his tendencies towards cannibalism. Kuchkoravi was informed of the court's decision through video conference.
According to the prosecution, Sunil Kuchkoravi brutally murdered his 63-year-old mother, Yallama Rama Kuchkoravi, on August 28, 2017, at their home in Kolhapur city. He then chopped her body and consumed some of her organs after frying them in a pan. The prosecution alleged that the motive behind the murder was the deceased's refusal to give the accused money to purchase liquor.
In 2021, a Kolhapur court sentenced Sunil Kuchkoravi to death. The convict, who is currently lodged in Pune's Yerwada jail, filed an appeal challenging his conviction and death sentence.
