NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi will be conferred Commonwealth of Dominica ’s highest civilian award in recognition of his contributions to Dominica during Covid-19 pandemic, the country announced on Thursday.
Dominican President Sylvanie Burton will confer the Dominica Award of Honour on Modi at India-CARICOM Summit , set to take place in Georgetown, Guyana, from Nov 19-21. In Feb 2021, India supplied Dominica with 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.
“The Commonwealth of Dominica will bestow its highest national award, the Dominica Award of Honour, upon Narendra Modi, PM of India, in recognition of his contributions to Dominica during the Covid-19 pandemic and his dedication to strengthening the partnership between India and Dominica,” a statement issued by the Dominican PM’s office said.
Dominican PM Roosevelt Skerrit said the award is an “expression of Dominica’s gratitude for PM Modi’s solidarity with Dominica and the wider region”, it stated.
This will be the 16th international honour to be bestowed upon Modi, and several BJP members, including Union ministers, said this shows his growing acceptance as a world leader.
Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, “This announcement is a testament to PM Modi’s global stature, India’s emergence as a ‘vishwa mitra’ under his visionary leadership as well as India’s growing influence as a champion of global peace and well-being.”
“Under the leadership of Modi, India is rising in global stature and emerging as a key force in shaping the world’s future,” Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said. Earlier, Modi had been recognised with awards like France’s Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour; UAE’s Order of Zayed; Russia’s Order of St Andrew; the Seoul Peace Prize; and the United Nations Champions of the Earth Award.
