Government extends deadline of mandatory automated transport vehicle fitness test by 6 months

NEW DELHI: In a big relief to owners of transport vehicles , including trucks and buses, the road transport ministry has decided to extend the deadline for their mandatory fitness test at automated testing stations ( ATS ) by six months. The earlier deadline was Oct 1, 2024

TOI has learnt that the decision has been taken considering that at present, there are only 81 operational ATS in the country, and 24 of these, are in Gujarat. Some states don’t even have a single operational ATS. Around 184 ATS are under construction, and these may take a few more months to become operational.

Sources said the main reason behind pushing the timeline for the second time, is the inadequate number of such centres. As per law, commercial vehicles such as buses, trucks, and cabs need to get a fitness test done every two years till they are eight years’ old, and after that the test must be done annually.

Rules specify that vehicles failing to pass a fitness test canʼt ply on the road. In the case of cars, the test is done after 15 years from the date of registration. ATS ensures that there is no human intervention during the test, and reports are factual.
