Government rolls out corporation internships, targets placing 1 lakh by December

NEW DELHI: Govt is seeking to put one lakh youth for internship under the PM Internship Scheme in top companies by Dec 2 and launched registration by top 500 companies based on CSR spend, which will be followed by online applications by aspirants between 21 and 24 years.

On day one of the pilot, 111 companies including M&M , Alembic and Max Life had registered on the portal set up by the ministry of corporate affairs and had offered 1,079 internships largely spread across production and maintenance, a senior govt official said. So far, the offers have been confined to facilities in Maharashtra, Telangana, Gujarat and Uttarakhand.. Companies that are not on the list can also seek participation.

The scheme, announced by the finance minister in the budget with a payout of Rs 66,000 to every intern, comes with the Centre's reservation policy for SC/STs, OBCs and persons with disabilities and those whose parents or spouse have an income of up to Rs 8 lakh will be eligible. Graduates from institutes such as IITs and IIMs, as well as professionals like CA and doctors are ineligible.

Sources said the endeavour is to provide internships within the home district or the adjoining district . The pilot is expected to cost Rs 800 crore and the learnings from this will be used to finetune the scheme that is targeted to generate one crore internships over five years and help bridge the skill gap for both companies and candidates. Apart from the monthly financial assistance of Rs 5,000 for one year, there will be a one-time grant of Rs 6,000 for the interns, the sources said.

Online registration for candidates will be open from Oct 12 to 25, with the ministry shortlisting applicants on Oct 26. Companies will have time till Nov 7 to select candidates, who will then be given a week to accept the offer, the sources said.
