NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the government's plan to construct a national maritime heritage complex in Gujarat 's Lothal , regarded as the world's oldest dockyard, will enhance people's knowledge of civilizational history . In a LinkedIn post titled 'Let's focus on tourism ', PM Modi lauded the project as a remarkable development.

The Prime Minister said, "When tourism rises, incomes across the board rise. I urge you all, leading and respected professionals, to explore new opportunities in the tourism sector and also share your ideas with me on the same." He added that this effort will contribute to a stronger economy while preserving the rich past for future generations.

"This way, we will contribute to a stronger economy and at the same time, preserve our rich past for the coming generations. The complex will bring ancient Lothal back to life as a mini-replica of the dock city," the prime minister added.

Modi highlighted Lothal's historical significance as a vibrant melting pot of civilisations, ideas, and goods, with excavations revealing its role as an important maritime centre. He praised the advanced engineering and urban planning of the ancient docks , which leave modern observers in awe and offer a glimpse into the brilliance of the past.

Criticising previous governments for neglecting historical sites and allowing aspects of history to fade from memory, Modi noted that the last 10 years have seen a change in this trend. The decision to build a vibrant national maritime heritage complex is in line with this spirit, aiming to improve the understanding of civilisational history.

The complex will feature an iconic lighthouse museum , standing 77 metres high and set to be among the world's tallest of its kind. Various immersive galleries will enhance the visitor experience, bringing ancient Lothal back to life as a mini-replica of the dock city.
