Send Push
NEW DELHI: The Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections held after a decade in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the results set to be announced on October 8.

This marks the first election since the abrogation of Article 370 , which stripped the region of its special status and transformed it into a Union Territory.

Following the recent delimitation, the assembly now consists of 90 seats, with the Jammu region having a slightly larger representation than the Kashmir Valley.

The Congress and National Conference (NC) formed an alliance to contest the elections against the BJP , while the People's Democratic Party (PDP), based in the valley, chose to run independently.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is focusing primarily on seats in the Jammu region, where it faces a direct contest with the grand old party.

Here are some of the key candidates and constituencies:

  • Ganderbal - Omar Abdullah (NC) and Sarjan Ahmad Wagay (Independent)

  • Bijbehara - Iltija Mufti (PDP)

  • Sopore - Aijaz Ahmad Guroo (Independent)

  • Channapora - Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari (JKAP)

  • Budgam - Omar Abdullah

  • Baramulla - Muzaffar Hussain Baig (Independent)

  • Kupwara - Sajad Lone (People's Conference)

  • Handwara - Sajad Lone (People's Conference), Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan (NC)

  • Chhamb - Tara Chand (INC)

  • Nowshera - Ravinder Raina (BJP)

  • Beerwah - Sarjan Ahmad Wagay (Independent)

  • Central Shalteng - Tariq Hameed Karra (INC)

Jammu and Kashmir saw a voter turnout of 63.88 percent in the overall election cycle, the Election Commission of India announced in a statement.

In the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election, the C Voter exit poll has predicted that the Congress-National Conference alliance will be closest to the majority mark by winning around 40-48 seats in the 90-member assembly.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which the C Voter has anticipated to emerge as the single largest party in the Jammu region, is likely to end up in second spot by winning 27-32 seats in the J&K polls. Mehbooba Mufti's PDP, which in the last election tied up with the BJP to form the government, is anticipated to win 6-12 seats.
