NEW DELHI: A political storm erupted on Sunday following the resignation of senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi minister Kailash Gahlot from the party's primary membership. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hailed his decision as a bold move, AAP accused the BJP of employing "dirty politics and conspiracy" to pressure Gahlot into leaving.
Gahlot, in his resignation letter, expressed disillusionment with the party's trajectory, citing internal challenges and a shift in focus from public service to political ambitions. He also criticized AAP’s failure to address issues like Yamuna River pollution and alleged that controversies such as the "Sheeshmahal" debacle had eroded public trust in the party.
BJP praises Gahlot’s decision
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva commended Gahlot for exposing the AAP leadership. “Kailash Gahlot has shown the mirror to Arvind Kejriwal and distanced himself from his ‘lootera gang.’ His decision reflects courage, and we appreciate it,” Sachdeva said.
BJP leader Nalin Kohli echoed the sentiment, highlighting Gahlot’s criticism of AAP’s governance. “His resignation letter underscores the worsening pollution in the Yamuna and exposes AAP’s failure to fulfill promises. The party’s governance model has been reduced to excuses and deflection,” Kohli stated.
AAP alleges BJP pressure
AAP leaders, however, claimed Gahlot’s resignation was the result of BJP’s coercion through central agencies. Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh alleged that Gahlot faced raids by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax Department, along with accusations of corruption involving ?112 crore.
“Gahlot had no option but to leave. The BJP’s conspiracy and misuse of ED and CBI forced him to take this step,” Singh said.
AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar supported the claims, stating, “Gahlot likely chose the BJP over jail. Hours before his resignation, he was still working for AAP. The pressure tactics are evident.”
Implications ahead of elections
Delhi chief minister Atishi has accepted Gahlot’s resignation, which comes months before the capital’s assembly polls. The development is expected to influence political narratives as both parties intensify their campaigns.
This resignation not only spotlights allegations of political coercion but also raises questions about AAP's internal cohesion and governance record, setting the stage for a contentious electoral battle in Delhi.
