Man wanted in over 50 cases gunned down in UP encounter

MEERUT: A man wanted in connection with more than 50 criminal cases, including murder and extortion, was killed in a police encounter early Sunday morning.

Rajesh Kumar (30) was a resident of Sihlinagar, Anupshahr, and carried a bounty of Rs 1.5 lakh. SSP Shlok Kumar said Kumar, who was on a motorcycle, opened fire on the police team when the cops signalled him to stop. "In retaliation, cops fired back, wounding Kumar. Kumar was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. One station house officer and a constable were also hurt in the incident," the SSP said.

Kumar had been on the run for months, frequently changing hideouts to evade arrest. His body has been sent for postmortem examination, said police.

In another incident on Sunday in Khurja in Bulandshahr , two men - accused of killing an Armyman, Gaurav Singh (25), on Oct 9 in Vimla Nagar area - were arrested following a gunfight. The two arrested men have been identified as Babulal and Golu Singh. While being rushed to hospital, the Armyman named Babulal as one of the attackers before succumbing to bullet injuries.
