Manmohan Singh's tribute to Ratan Tata: 'Had courage to speak truth to men in power'

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday condoled the demise of Ratan Tata , Chairman Emeritus of one of India's biggest conglomerates, Tata Sons .

In an emotion letter to N Chandrasekaran, chairperson of Tata Sons, veteran Congress leader described Tata as 'a man who had the "courage of speaking the truth to the men in power" and mourned the loss of a "stalwart of Indian industry".

Singh asserted that Ratan Tata's legacy extended far beyond his role as a business icon. He highlighted Tata's vision and compassion, which were evident in the numerous charitable organisations he established and supported throughout his life.

"Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Ratan Tata ji, a stalwart of Indian Industry. He was much more than a business icon, his vision and humanity demonstrated in the work of several charities founded and nurtured during his life," the former PM wrote in the letter.

"He was having the courage of speaking the truth to the men in power. I have fond memories of working very closely with him on several occasions. I take this opportunity to convey my deepest condolences on this sad occasion. May his soul Rest in Peace," he wrote.

The nation, including industrialists and political leaders from various parties, has united in mourning the loss of Ratan Tata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the Padma Vibhushan recipient, describing him as a "visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being". PM Modi praised Tata's steady leadership at one of India's most long-standing and esteemed business conglomerates, while also acknowledging his contributions beyond the corporate world. Tata's humility, generosity, and unwavering dedication to improving society endeared him to countless individuals.

Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of the Tata Group , passed away at a Mumbai hospital late on Wednesday night at the age of 86.

Tata’s body was taken to Mumbai’s National Centre for the Performing Arts, where the public, industrialists, state officials and celebrities lined up to pay their final respects.

Current Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran described Tata as his “friend, mentor, and guide.”
