'People of MVA, answer!': BJP counters 'cash-for-vote' allegations with video of money distribution in Rohit Pawar's constituency

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday levelled charges against NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar for distributing cash to voters on the eve of Maharashtra assembly elections.

This comes hours after the opposition bloc targeted the ruling party after senior BJP leader Vinod Tawde was caught in the "cash-for-votes" row.

BJP Maharashtra unit, through its social media handle, posted a video of officials from Baramati Agro, a company owned by Rohit Pawar, NCP (SP) candidate from Karjatkar-Jamkhed, allegedly distributing money.

Taking to X, BJP said, "Throughout the day, distribution of crores of rupees is ongoing in Rohit Pawar's constituency. In many villages, money is being distributed by officials of the Baramati Agro Company. There is an attempt to buy votes using money, which is being carried out through Rohit Pawar."

"This is the third incident that has come to light today. Where did the crores of rupees come from in the Karjat Jamkhed constituency? The people of Maha Vikas Aghadi and Rohit Pawar, answer!" the post added.

Meanwhile, an FIR was lodged against Tawde after Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) chief Hitendra Thakur accused the BJP national general secretary of distributing money to voters in Palghar.

The district authorities in Palghar said that a police team comprising senior officials recovered Rs 9.93 lakh in cash and some incriminating documents from the hotel where some BJP activists were allegedly distributing money. Tawde, however, has denied the charges. He was backed by the BJP, which called the charges baseless and termed the incident a desperate bid by MVA ahead of polling on Wednesday.

Leaders of the opposition MVA demanded a comprehensive investigation by the Election Commission, with Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut suggesting a conspiracy against Tawde by some BJP leaders.

Speaking to reporters, BVA MLA Thakur alleged that Tawde came to Virar with Rs 5 crore to influence voters. "Some BJP leaders informed me that BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde is coming to Virar to disburse Rs 5 crore to influence voters. I thought a national leader like him would not stoop to such a trivial task. But I saw him here. I urge the Election Commission to take action against him and the BJP. The hotel’s CCTV recording was initially deactivated, showing complicity," Thakur claimed.
