PM Modi lauds Brazil for global alliance against hunger

NEW DELHI: India has pulled 250 million people out of poverty in the last 10 years and is distributing free foodgrains to 800 million of its citizens, PM Narendra Modi said Tuesday as he lauded Brazil's initiative to set up a global alliance against hunger and poverty.

Addressing the opening session of G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Modi said the Global South has been severely impacted by food, fuel and fertiliser crises created by the ongoing conflicts, and therefore, its concern ought to be given primacy.

"So our discussions can only be successful when we keep in mind the challenges and priorities of the Global South. And, just as we amplified the voice of the Global South by granting permanent membership of G20 to African Union during New Delhi summit, we will reform institutions of global governance," he said.

"Commendable initiative by Brazilian G20 presidency for launching global alliance against hunger and poverty at G20 summit," he said on X.

Modi highlighted the steps taken by India to strengthen food security in Africa and elsewhere.

He appreciated Brazilian G20 agenda's focus on sustainable development goals, noting that this approach highlighted concerns of the Global South and took forward people-centric decisions of New Delhi G20 summit - held last September.

Modi underscored that Indian G20 presidency's call for 'One Earth, One Family, One Future' continued to resonate at Rio conversations.

Sources said Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told PM Modi that several initiatives that they have tried to take in G20 meeting have been inspired by the grouping's New Delhi meeting. While opening the bilateral meeting, he said Brazil wanted to reach the level of efficiency in organising the summit that India had shown.
