AGARTALA: With the criticism from opposition parties about the deteriorating law and order situation and unabetted crimes across Tripura, chief minister Dr Manik Saha on Monday along with Home Secretary Pradip Chakraborty held a meeting in Police headquarters.

After reviewing law and order with Director General of Police, State Intelligence chief, IGs, DIGs, and district SPs, Chief Minister said, “Police have been instructed to step up security ahead of Durga puja , enhance the performance of police stations, immediately respond and register complaint of any individual and strain action against the criminals without any consideration.”

He said police have taken significant action against around three lakh anti-social elements over the past three years, while also witnessing a nearly 10% increase in the arrest of border touts, and adopted zero tolerance against the criminals involved in crime on women and drugs.

Besides general crime, law and order, and public security, Dr Saha addressed the issues of drug trafficking and Rohingya infiltration . He stressed the importance of regular inspections, addressing property crimes, and small thefts, and improving coordination among the security agencies and the public at large.

Highlighting the success, DGP Amitabha Ranjan underlined a significant reduction in overall crime in the state. He claimed comparing the periods from 2014 to 2016 to 2022 to 2024, the number of reported crimes decreased from 10,000 to 9,000.

“This year, we have recorded the lowest crime rate in 10 years. In 2014, the total crime figure stood at 4,026, while by August 2024, it had dropped to 2,700. Despite population growth and challenges, we have successfully controlled and reduced crime,” he noted.

He also pointed to a considerable decline in crimes against women, with figures dropping from 2,700 between 2014 and 2016 to 1,500 in the period from 2022 to 2024. Physical violence cases have also decreased from 2,800 to 2,500, while property-related offenses have gone down from 1,240 to around 800.

Addressing the narcotics issue, the DGP mentioned that Tripura has achieved the highest drug seizure rate in the Northeast. However, he acknowledged the challenge posed by the state’s location along an international highway, which is exploited for drug trafficking through the Golden Triangle to Bangladesh.

“We are tackling this issue head-on. From 2014 to 2016, there were 83 NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases, but now the figure has surged to 512. Massive action is being taken,” Ranjan maintained.

Tripura Police have also detained around 2,000 individuals for illegal infiltration, with a significant number of arrests involving border touts. The number of tout arrests has increased by 10% in recent years. From 2022 to 2024, preventive action was taken against 1.70 lakh individuals, and prosecution reports were submitted for over one lakh people, DGP added.
