'You back party that fosters disunity': Congress attacks RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Saturday launched a fierce attack on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ( RSS ) chief Mohan Bhagwat following his remarks on the condition of Hindus in Bangladesh , accusing him of supporting a party that promotes disunity in India .

During the Swayamsevak Sangh's centenary Dussehra event, Bhagwat expressed concerns about anti-Hindu and anti-minority forces in Bangladesh and said, “What happened in our neighbouring Bangladesh? It might have some immediate reasons, but those who are concerned will discuss it. But, due to that chaos, the tradition of committing atrocities against Hindus was repeated there." Calling all Hindus to unite, Bhagwat said, "Being weak is a crime. If we are weak, we are inviting atrocity. Wherever we are, we need to be united and empowered.”

Reacting to his remarks, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge criticised Bhagwat for supporting a party that, according to him, sows division within the country. Kharge said, “You (Bhagwat) are the one who supports the party ( BJP ) which wants disunity in the country. It starts with changing the Constitution, ending reservation, and then speaking different things about Muslims.”

Meanwhile, Congress leader Pawan Khera also questioned Bhagwat's stance and said that what he remarked was in contradiction to the RSS’s approach to minorities.

Khera said, “It is good if he understood the condition of minorities through Bangladesh and also what the minorities should do. But what is surprising is that if minorities in India say they should unite, they (RSS) see it as a threat. Bhagwat ji says that Hindus across the world should unite, which is good. But why do they feel bad when Owaisi mentions Palestine in Parliament? They should answer these contradictions.”
