In a significant development, Amazon has announced the closure of its ad-supported streaming service , Freevee. The platform, which offered free access to a wide range of films and TV shows, will be phased out over the coming weeks. This decision forms part of Amazon’s strategy to simplify its streaming services and provide a more cohesive user experience, as reported by Radio Times.
The Evolution of Freevee
Launched in January 2019 under the name IMDb Freedive, the service was rebranded as IMDb TV later that year. In 2022, it adopted its final name, Freevee, continuing as a free, ad-supported streaming platform.
Freevee gained a loyal following, offering thousands of films and TV shows, including hits such as Jury Duty, the rebooted Neighbours, and Bosch: Legacy. It also featured original Amazon Prime Video series like Reacher and The Wheel of Time, allowing non-Prime members to watch select episodes for free with ad interruptions.
Despite its popularity, Freevee will now be discontinued as Amazon looks to streamline its offerings.
Why Is Amazon Shutting Down Freevee?
Amazon’s decision to close Freevee reflects its commitment to simplifying the streaming experience for customers. According to a statement provided to Variety, the company plans to consolidate its streaming options under the Prime Video umbrella.
"We have built Prime Video into a first-stop entertainment destination where customers can personalise their viewing experience by streaming exclusive Prime member content, licensed movies, series, live sports, and free, ad-supported streaming TV channels, along with the complete Freevee content offering," the company said, as quoted in Radio Times.
This move will not impact the availability of Freevee’s content for Prime members. The shows and films previously available on Freevee will now be integrated into Prime Video and remain accessible to non-Prime members through a free, ad-supported experience.
What Does This Mean for Freevee Users?
While Freevee is being shut down, its viewers will not lose access to the content. All Freevee programmes will transition to the Prime Video platform. Non-Prime members can continue watching these shows and films for free under the "Watch for Free" section within the Prime Video app.
This ensures there will be no disruption for users, though the content will now be available within a unified app.
When Is Freevee Shutting Down?
Amazon has not provided an exact date for Freevee’s closure, but reports suggest the transition will occur over the coming weeks. Users should expect the service to be gradually phased out soon.
