Bengaluru and Pune rank sixth and seventh among the world's most congested cities; check out the list

Bengaluru and Pune’s congestion problems are well-known across India, and both cities recently shared a spot on the TomTom traffic index 2023. Bengaluru ranked 6th with an average travel time of 28 minutes and 10 seconds, while Pune followed closely at 7th position with 27 minutes and 50 seconds. Topping the list in the city was London , with an average travel time of 37 minutes and 20 seconds. Brussels, Belgium, had the lowest average time of just 27 minutes.

Earlier this year, the index showed a decline in average speeds for many cities. The index analysed 387 cities, out of which, 82 cities saw no change in their average speed. The TomTom index analyses yearly congestion conditions in cities around the world. Through this analysis of the movement of people, products, and services, the list aids in highlighting the need for better road infrastructure to reduce time in traffic.

London, UK

London has the highest travel time per 10 km, averaging 37 minutes and 20 seconds. With a 45% congestion level, commuters lose 148 hours per year, travelling at an average speed of 14 km/h.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin faces severe traffic congestion , with a 66% congestion level and an average travel time of 29 minutes 30 seconds. Commuters lose 158 hours yearly, moving at an average speed of 16 km/h.

Toronto, Canada

Toronto has an average travel time of 29 minutes per 10 km and a 42% congestion level. Commuters lose 98 hours annually, with an average speed of 18 km/h, reflecting moderate traffic challenges.

Milan, Italy

Milan's average travel time is 28 minutes and 50 seconds, with a 45% congestion level. Residents lose 137 hours per year due to traffic, and the average speed remains at 17 km/h.

Lima, Peru

In Lima, the average travel time per 10 km is 28 minutes 30 seconds, with a high congestion level of 61%. Commuters lose 157 hours annually, with an average speed of 17 km/h.

Bengaluru, India

Bengaluru faces heavy congestion, with an average travel time of 28 minutes 10 seconds and a 63% congestion level. Commuters lose 132 hours yearly, with an average speed of 18 km/h.

Pune, India

Pune's average travel time is 27 minutes 50 seconds, with a 57% congestion level. Commuters lose 128 hours per year, with an average speed of 19 km/h, reflecting significant traffic delays.

Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest sees an average travel time of 27 minutes 40 seconds per 10 km, with a 55% congestion level. Commuters lose 150 hours annually, travelling at an average speed of 17 km/h.

Manila, Philippines

Manila has an average travel time of 27 minutes and 20 seconds, with a 46% congestion level. Commuters lose 105 hours yearly, with an average speed of 19 km/h, facing moderate traffic challenges.

Brussels, Belgium

Brussels ranks tenth, with an average travel time of 27 minutes per 10 km and a congestion level of 37%. Commuters lose 104 hours per year, with an average speed of 18 km/h.
