Elon Musk , the billionaire entrepreneur, has claimed that his social media platform X has registered 'all-time high' usage amid the US presidential election, which saw Donald Trump secure a second term as Republican president.
According to a graphic shared by Musk, X achieved 434.1 billion global user seconds, a measurement that calculates users' collective time spent on the platform worldwide.
He further revealed that new user registrations surged by 15.5%, with a notable 43% increase in sign-ups specifically during the election vote tallying period.
Additionally, Musk announced that X has achieved significant milestones in international markets, securing the leading position amongst news applications on Canada's AppStore and ranking second in Norway's news app category.
Role of X in US election
Elon Musk demonstrated substantial backing for Donald Trump's 2024 presidential bid, marking a notable transformation in his political stance and contributing significantly to Trump's victory. Despite his previously liberal inclinations, Musk aligned himself with Trump's "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement, utilising his considerable resources and his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to strengthen Trump's campaign messages.
The scale of Musk's financial support during the 2024 campaign was remarkable, with documented contributions of approximately $132 million towards Trump's campaign and associated Republican initiatives. Through his America political action committee (PAC), Musk directed $75 million specifically to Trump's campaign, establishing himself as a key supporter of the former president. Trump acknowledged this support in his victory address, describing Musk as a "new star" and a "super genius" deserving protection.
Beyond monetary contributions, Musk's influence extended through his social media platform, X, which became an instrumental channel for MAGA perspectives. Following his $44 billion acquisition in 2022, which podcast presenter Joe Rogan criticised as unwise, Musk discovered the platform's strategic value. During a conversation with Rogan, Musk acknowledged, "It wasn't worth that in the first place," suggesting the platform's sociopolitical impact exceeded its financial worth. Under Musk's leadership, X became a space that promoted pro-Trump messaging, restored Trump's previously suspended account, and enabled the circulation of disputed information and conspiracy theories, raising concerns among critics.
