Ethel Kennedy , the 96-year-old widow of Senator Robert F Kennedy Sr, was hospitalized last week after suffering a stroke in her sleep, her family revealed on Tuesday. The Kennedy matriarch was then taken to a local hospital for treatment.

In a statement posted to social media platform X, her daughter Rory Kennedy provided an update on her mother’s condition, saying, "She is comfortable, she is getting the best care possible, and she is surrounded by family." Rory also expressed gratitude for the support from the public, adding, "Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers."

Ethel Kennedy, the mother of 11 children, including former presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr, is the oldest living member of the Kennedy family . Her late husband, Robert F Kennedy Sr, a US senator from New York, was assassinated in June 1968 while campaigning for the presidency.

Despite her age, Ethel had enjoyed an active summer surrounded by her loved ones, her family shared. "She has had a great summer and transition into fall," Rory wrote in a separate post. "Every day she enjoyed time with her children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was able to get out on the water, visit the pier, and enjoy many lunches and dinners with family. It has been a gift to all of us and to her as well."

Ethel Kennedy turned 96 in April and remains a revered figure in the Kennedy family, often celebrated for her resilience and devotion to public service. As she receives treatment, her family remains by her side, asking for continued support from well-wishers during this difficult time.
