A series of racist text messages were reportedly sent to Black people soon after Donald Trump's win in the election, some were sent to even school students. Federal authorities Thursday said they were already looking into the case. Screenshots of such messages flooded social media with Trump-haters commenting that it's only been two days, literally, after the election.
"Congratulations! You have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation. Please be prepared to leave your home November 24, 2024 you will be picked up at 8am shart in our white van. Also you will sit with Group C Have a nice say. Sincerely, A TRUMP SUPPORTER," the messages read like this with the date and time adjusted.
Who is sending these racist text messages? Who are the targets?
The FBI said it was aware of the offensive and racist text messages being forwarded across the US. According to CNN and the AP, the messages were sent anonymously to people living in several states, including Maryland, New Jersey, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, Nevada, New York and South Caroline.
People started received the messaged the morning after Election Day.
Almost all messages were from a 'TRUMP SUPPORTER'.
The University of Alabama said “individuals across the country have received these disgusting messages” and urged anyone with information about them to report it, a statement said.
New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, at loggerheads with Donald Trump, said the “texts appear to be targeting Black and Brown individuals, including students, and may include personal information about the recipient such as their name or location."
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said the campaign has absolutely nothing to do with these text messages.
"Surprised by this I am not," a social media user reacted to the news.
"Historian of slavery here. Welcome to Trumps America," another wrote.
