A shooting during Tennessee State University 's homecoming celebrations on Saturday afternoon has left one dead and nine others injured. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. near the university campus as two groups exchanged gunfire , causing chaos among the crowd.

Metro Nashville Police reported that shell casings found at the scene indicated gunfire was exchanged across a street near the university, although the shooting was not believed to be directly connected to the homecoming events, which included a parade and festivities earlier in the day. The football game was taking place at a different venue at the time.

A 24-year-old man was killed in the shooting, while five others were taken to local hospitals by ambulance. Four additional victims were transported by private vehicle. Among the injured were three minors, aged 12 to 14, who are in non-critical condition, according to police.

Metro Nashville Police said that some of the injured may have been involved in the gunfire exchange, while others were likely innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. Injuries ranged from minor to critical, with some victims suffering graze wounds. One handgun was recovered from the scene.

Witnesses described a scene of panic, with people running for cover as the shots rang out. Jashawna Rucker, who was nearby, told WTVF-TV that she was relieved to have avoided injury. "I am thankful I didn’t lose my life or get shot," she said.

First responders, including police and fire personnel, were already at the scene due to the earlier events. Firefighters used belts as tourniquets to help the injured, authorities said.

Police have launched an investigation into the shooting, which has marred what was supposed to be a festive day for the community. Metro Nashville Police Commander Anthony McClain condemned the violence, calling it “unfortunate” and urging an end to such incidents.
