US election results 2024: Donald Trump wins Florida for third consecutive election

Republican leader and former US President Donald Trump secured another victory in Florida, winning the state's 30 electoral votes. Associated Press declared Trump as the winner at 8.01 pm EST. This marks the third consecutive election win for Trump in Florida.

Florida, once considered a key battleground state, has shown a clear shift towards the Republican Party. The last time a Democratic presidential candidate won the state was Barack Obama in 2012. Trump's victory margins have also increased in Florida, his adopted home state, since 2016.

Florida's shift to the Republican side was further solidified by the re-election of Republican Senator Rick Scott. Scott defeated Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, securing his second term. Scott aims to take over the GOP leadership role from Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who is retiring.

Scott's win comes despite hopes from Democrats that ballot measures regarding abortion rights and marijuana legalization would increase voter turnout in their favor. In 2018, Scott narrowly won his first Senate seat, requiring a recount in an election where Democrats held a voter registration advantage. The situation has now reversed, with Republicans surpassing Democrats by nearly a million registered voters. Scott's win mirrors the significant victories of Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and Senator Marco Rubio in previous elections.

Republican candidates saw continued success in Florida's House races, with victories across multiple districts. Neal Dunn won re-election in the 2nd Congressional District, while Cory Mills secured a win in the 7th District. Laurel Lee retained her seat in the 15th District, Aaron Bean won re-election in the 4th District, and Scott Franklin emerged victorious again in the 18th District.
