UAE's National Day Celebrations to Be Known as 'Eid Al Etihad'

The has officially renamed its National Day celebrations to “Eid Al Etihad,” as announced by the organising committee on Tuesday. The term “Eid Al Etihad,” which means “Festival of Union,” reflects the theme of “union” (Etihad), honoring the unification of the seven emirates on December 2, 1971. This theme underscores the UAE’s heritage, unity, strength, and national pride.

Every year on December 2, the UAE celebrates this significant event with a grand show attended by the Rulers of the Emirates. Although the location of this year’s main event has not yet been revealed, the committee has announced that “Eid Al Etihad zones” will feature events and activities across all seven Emirates on National Day.

This year’s celebration also marks the final long weekend of 2024, as the public holiday on December 2 and 3 (Monday and Tuesday) will combine with the preceding weekend to create a four-day holiday.

Eisa Alsubousi, Director of Strategic and Creative Affairs of the Organising Committee of the 53rd Eid Al Etihad, stated: “We invite everyone to join in the joy of this historic moment as we celebrate the unification of the Emirates. To enhance the celebrations, we’ve developed comprehensive guides to encourage sustainable celebrations. We urge government bodies, private companies, schools, and families to use these resources to participate.”

This year’s Eid Al Etihad will focus on sustainability and collaboration. Residents are encouraged to minimize waste, recycle and upcycle decorations, and reuse materials to honor the day in an eco-friendly manner.

The committee shared, “The 53rd Eid Al Etihad guides provide ways for everyone—at home, school, or work—to participate sustainably. There’s always an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to this celebration.”
