RIYADH: In a tragic incident, two Saudi military personnel—a commissioned officer and a non-commissioned officer—lost their lives, and another officer sustained injuries following an unexpected assault within a Saudi military camp in Sayoun, Yemen. The spokesperson for the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, Brig. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, confirmed the attack took place on Friday evening during a routine sports training session at the camp, which is known for its pivotal role in coalition operations.

The military camp, strategically located in Sayoun, is central to coalition efforts, including personnel training, counter-terrorism and anti-smuggling operations, as well as humanitarian and developmental support for Yemen. According to the Saudi Press Agency, the perpetrator, affiliated with the Yemeni Ministry of Defense, acted independently and does not represent the values of the ministry or its personnel. The attacker’s actions have prompted a thorough investigation by joint forces in coordination with the Yemeni Ministry of Defense.

Brig. Gen. Al-Maliki expressed sorrow over the loss of the two servicemen and emphasized the dedication of most members within the Yemeni ministry, who value and appreciate the coalition’s efforts to support Yemeni legitimacy and alleviate the hardships faced by the Yemeni people.

Following the incident, the injured officer and the bodies of the two servicemen were immediately evacuated to Saudi Arabia. The coalition, alongside Yemeni defense officials, is committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the motive behind the attack, ensure the attacker is brought to justice, and reinforce security within coalition facilities.

On behalf of the coalition leadership, Brig. Gen. Al-Maliki extended heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen soldiers, and expressed hopes for a swift recovery for the wounded officer.

This attack marks a somber reminder of the challenges and dangers faced by coalition forces operating in the conflict-ridden landscape of Yemen, where personnel work tirelessly to bring stability, support, and relief to those affected by years of strife.
