Jodhpur, 18 November 2024 The 62nd martyrdom anniversary of Major Shaitan Singh, the hero of the 1962 Sino-Indian War and recipient of the nation’s highest gallantry award, the Param Veer Chakra, was commemorated with full military honors at Param Veer Circle, Paota, Jodhpur.
Honoring the BraveheartThe event saw the participation of military officers, retired defense personnel, civilians, and students. A brief recount of Major Shaitan Singh’s unparalleled heroism was shared with the audience, followed by floral tributes. Among those paying homage were:
- 40 students from Chaupasini School, where Major Shaitan Singh studied during his childhood, donning saffron turbans in a symbolic gesture of respect.
- Granddaughter of Major Shaitan Singh, who honored the legacy of her grandfather.
An impeccably turned-out guard from the Mechanised Infantry conducted a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, offering a silent tribute to the martyr with inverted rifles.
The Heroics of Major Shaitan SinghMajor Shaitan Singh was commanding 13 Kumaon Regiment at Rezang La, Jammu & Kashmir, situated at a staggering altitude of 17,000 feet. On 18 November 1962, Chinese troops launched a massive attack on his position with overwhelming numbers.
His Acts of Bravery:His supreme sacrifice, inspirational leadership, and unwavering courage earned him the Param Veer Chakra (Posthumous), India’s highest military honor for valor.
