In a time when India’s batters have often struggled to perform consistently, two standout players have been catching attention with their impressive form on the global stage. Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel, both wicketkeeper-batsmen for the , have not only delivered in recent matches for India but are also prime examples of the Royals’ dedication to player development. According to Zubin Bharucha, Rajasthan Royals’ High-Performance Director, the franchise’s strategic investment in specialized training has been a key factor in the success of these players.
Royals’ Tailored Training Methods: From Talegaon to DubaiAt the heart of the Royals’ player development strategy lies their high-performance training center in Talegaon. This facility provides customized pitch conditions, designed to prepare players for any challenge. Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan Royals, and Dhruv Jurel, retained by the franchise for a hefty Rs 14 crore, have benefited greatly from the Royals’ rigorous and methodical approach to training.
“We simulate various conditions, pushing players to adapt to extreme situations,” Bharucha explained. “When Jurel played on an 8mm grass pitch at the MCG, he wasn’t fazed because we had him practicing on 12mm grass in Talegaon right after the IPL. This preps them for difficult matches.”
Sanju Samson: Sharpened in Dubai’s Bouncy NetsWhen Samson was set to face South Africa’s notoriously bouncy pitches, the Royals took a proactive step to send him to Dubai for practice sessions at the ICC Academy. “We had a two-day session with Sanju in Dubai because the ICC Academy’s pitches are a bit bouncier,” Bharucha said. “They flew bowlers and support staff from India to Dubai just for these sessions, showing incredible commitment to Samson’s development.”
This preparation paid off spectacularly when Samson scored a fiery 107 off 50 balls, leading India to a 61-run victory against South Africa. For Samson, the experience with Rajasthan Royals meant he could confidently walk onto challenging pitches and deliver.
Creating the “Freedom of Opportunity” Through High VariabilityAccording to Bharucha, RR’s philosophy is built on the principle of “high variability” to prepare players for the unpredictable nature of the sport. “There’s an inevitable phase between success and failure for every player,” Bharucha explained. “Our goal as coaches is to turn that space from a fear of failure into a freedom of opportunity by meticulously preparing our players to perform under any condition.”
In line with this philosophy, the Royals expose players to varied pitch conditions throughout the year. Early post-IPL sessions focus on tougher, greener surfaces, followed by smoother, flatter pitches as the IPL season approaches. This training model has equipped players like Jurel and Samson to face international pitches with adaptability and resilience.
A Franchise Beyond the IPLThe Rajasthan Royals’ commitment goes beyond the IPL season. By continuously investing time, resources, and effort into player development, the Royals are helping shape the future of Indian cricket. Jurel’s composure in Melbourne, where he scored twin half-centuries, and Samson’s commanding innings in South Africa, both reflect the tangible outcomes of this investment.
For Samson, Jurel, and others like them, the Royals provide not just a team but a platform to elevate their game on the international stage. With Rajasthan Royals’ unwavering commitment, the journey for these players is more than a rise through the ranks—it’s a promise of excellence built on meticulous preparation and transformative training. As the Royals continue to support and nurture their talent, their players are proving that this commitment is a game-changer for Indian cricket.
