How to see Comet A3 if you missed it - but you only have days left

Send Push

If you missed the comet - which excited astronomers have dubbed the ‘comet of the century’- earlier this month, this weekend could be your last opportunity to see it.

This weekend will be the last chance for 80,000 years to see Comet A3, which was previously visible from September 27 until October 2, before it got too close to the sun to be seen.

But if you missed out on seeing it, you'll be pleased to know that it’s once again visible to the naked eye - but it won't be around for long, so if you want to see it, this weekend is your best chance.

While the comet won’t disappear completely until October 30, it will be at its brightest and most visible this weekend, making the next couple of days the easiest time to spot it. Visible in the northern hemisphere this weekend, the comet comes from Oort Cloud, which, according to astronomers, is further away than the normal planets and asteroids we often see in our skies.

Passing by earth at around 44 million miles away, the comet - which is named Tsuchinshan-ATLAS - is best spotted, according to NASA astronomer Bill Cooke, from ‘a dark vantage point’ and will be easier to see ‘just after nightfall’ when looking southwest.

The comet - which will be visible from 6pm - should be easily recognisable as it should feature a long, bright tail that makes it more noticeable in the sky. This extended tail made of dust and ice may also have an illuminated blue and white glow, according to experts.
