Inside David Suchet's life after Poirot from Agatha Christie return to new career

Send Push

David Suchet has been in the spotlight since the 1970s, but the actor saw his fame rise when he was cast in Agatha Christie's Poirot in the leading role of Hercule Poirot. The famous crime series aired from 1989 until 2013 and is based on many of Agatha Christie's fiction novels.

David, 78, appeared in all 13 series of Agatha Christie's Poirot and the role even earned him a BAFTA in 1991. However, he eventually hung up his iconic moustache in 2013 when the show came to an end.

He hasn't been short of acting roles since leaving the role of Poirot however, and David's gone on to continue starring in TV shows and films. He appeared in 2014 film Effie Gray and 2017 movie American Assassin.

Many will also recognise from the series Decline and Fall or BBC's His Dark Materials, in which he voiced Kaisa, as well as Doctor Who, where he portrayed the Landlord while Peter Capaldi was the Doctor.

His latest projects include starring in a theatre production of Peter Pan and the movie Dinner with Edward. David is set to star in Channel 5's upcoming drama, The Au Pair, alongside Vera's Kenny Doughty and Beyond Paradise star Sally Bretton.

Earlier this year, it was announced that David would be returning to the Agatha Christie world in a new documentary series, titled Travels with Agatha with Sir David Suchet.

The show will see David replicate the journey the crime writer embarked on back in the 1920s.

David will visit Canada, Hawaii, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia and it's been reported that filming began this summer. A release date hasn't been confirmed yet, but it's understood the series will be released at some point in 2024.

Speaking about the show, David said: "Having spent a quarter of a century personifying Agatha Christie’s iconic character of Hercule Poirot, I now feel so honoured to embark upon a journey around the world, as myself — in the footsteps of possibly the greatest crime writer of all times,"

While he's happily returned to the world of Agatha Christie for the series, it seems unlikely David will reprise his role as Poirot in the future.

During an interview on This Morning he admitted: "I have to say, I don't know because of my age whether I might be too old now. If the silver screen did come along, I might be tempted."
