Comptroller and Auditor General of India ( CAG) Girish Chandra Murmu on Tuesday called for further bolstering local bodies, arguing that all-round development at the grass-root levels is a prerequisite for turning India into a developed India by 2047.
“More than 50% people live in rural areas, and until their governance, their development, their administration, their resources are not augmented, we will not be able to reach ( Viksit Bharat goal),” Murmu said.
Murmu inaugurated the ICAI’s local governance synergy conclave here, aimed at strengthening government accounting at the municipal levels.
“As our prime minister says that if everyone takes one step, we will have 1.4 billion steps... that is why Jan Bhagidari (people’s participation) is important," he said.
India has about 2,60,000 panchayats and 7,000 urban local bodies.
Murmu conceded that rural bodies are yet to get their due share of importance in the federal structure and called for strengthening them to eventually boost the delivery of various government schemes.
Speaking at the event, ICAI president Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal underscored the institute’s collaboration with the CAG to empower accounting at the local level.
“We all have come together to strengthen the best accounting and auditing practices across 2,60,000 panchayati raj institutions and 4,500 urban local bodies and contribute to building an equitable and financially resilient nation,” Agarwal said.
