Recently, an important report has been published in the medical journals Atherosclerosis Thrombosclerosis and Vascular Biology. This research includes more than 11,000 people who were infected with Covid-19 in the year 2020. This study is based on a large database called UK's 'Biobank', which contains medical records of about 2.5 million people.

From this database, the researchers identified more than 11,000 people who had a lab test positive for COVID-19. More than 3,000 of these people were hospitalized for severe infection. These groups were compared with 222,000 people who had no history of COVID-19.
Effect of COVID-19 on the heart
The research found that people who had COVID in 2020 had twice the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke or death even after recovery, compared to those who did not have COVID. If a person had needed to be hospitalized, their risk of major cardiac events was three times higher.
Increased risk after recovery from covid
For those who needed to be hospitalized, COVID was as high as the risk of future heart attack and stroke as those with diabetes or peripheral artery disease (PAD). One study estimated that more than 3.5 million Americans were hospitalized for COVID between May 2020 and April 2021.
