Cole Palmer was not deserving of top England gong - it just shows the frustrations

Cole Palmer was not the best England player at the Euros - never mind the best of the 2023/24 season.

He luckily scooped England's Player of the Year gong this week after fans voted him ahead of Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka.

Maybe that just goes to show how the nation feels about England's underperforming regular starters.

Palmer was the best English player last season, but not the best player for England.

If you're judging it on the Euro 2024 tournament, Marc Guehi has to be up there as the most consistent.

If you're going on important moments, Ollie Watkins' late strike in the semi-finals proved more valuable than Palmer's equaliser in the final.

Bellingham's acrobatic effort against Slovakia to keep the Three Lions in the tournament was more vital, too.

Palmer will deservedly win it again in the future - but he has to start matches at major tournaments first.

League One

Premier League and Championship clubs are given a mandatory weekend off but England's third tier has grown so strong that they may also need one.

Only two League One matches have survived this weekend.
