Manipur retracts intel report on Kuki militants entering state

Guwahati: Manipur chief minister's office has retracted its own intelligence report gathered 10 days ago about the infiltration of "900 Kuki militants from Myanmar," even as another piece of police intelligence surfaced on Thursday, indicating that "KNA (Kuki National Army) cadres are set to escorting arms, ammunition, drugs from Myanmar," raising concerns about how these sensitive intelligence inputs are being leaked.

Ningthoujam Geoffre, secretary to chief minister in a statement said that the earlier intel shared with police department on September 16 was “based on information gathered on movement of armed groups” to “enable police department to use Its machinery and network to develop the information so as to determine actionability.”

Geoffre added, “It Is now ascertained that possibility of any such misadventure by armed groups Is remote. The public need not worry further in this regard.”

The backtrack comes after the state DGP and security advisor to the state govt in a joint statement on Wednesday said, “there is no basis currently to believe in any such input.”

They added, “In view of the recent reactions from different communities regarding input of infiltration of 900 trained Kuki militants from Myanmar to carry out attacks on Meiteis on Sept 28, it is clarified that the input was verified from different quarters, but it could not be substantiated on ground.”

The new purported ‘secret’ intel from Manipur Police meant for the commanding officer of 5 Assam Rifles at Moreh that is on social media says, “It is reliably learnt that KNA cadres will be escorting arms, ammunition and drugs from Myanmar through Haolenphai and T Minou area. For kind information and necessary action please.”
