NEW DELHI: India and Maldives will commence the discussions on the Foreign Trade Agreement ( FTA ), foreign secretary Vikram Misri said while addressing a special briefing on the State visit of President Mohamed Muizzu.

On being asked about the possibility of FTA between India and Maldives, Misri on Monday said, "We have an agreement in principle during this visit that we will commence discussions on the FTA. It's our intention to do so as soon as possible. The two teams will now get in touch with each other and take that forward."

Meanwhile, the foreign secretary also said that soon an Indian consulate will open in Maldivian city Addu.

"As an Indian consulate is concerned, again, I invite your attention to the vision document, which talks about the intention to set up this consulate and indeed between the two leaders as well. This was a subject that both of them touched on, on the desirability of establishing this consulate," the foreign secretary said.

"Since this requires a fair amount of work on the ground, we will. Our teams will get in touch with each other and we will take this work," he added.

Even in the statement, both the countries agreed to work positively towards establishing a consulate of Maldives in Bengaluru and a consulate of India in Addu city recognizing that these would contribute to expansion of trade and economic cooperation and greater people-to-people contacts.

People-to-people linkages between India and Maldives have remained the bedrock of the special and unique ties between the two countries.
