Xiaomi patent reveals company working on smartphone that can be detached from the middle

Apparently, Chinese brand Xiaomi is working on a new smartphone with an entirely novel mechanism. It does resemble your typical clamshell-folding phone but can be detached at the middle. Still a prototype model as of now, it needs some more time before officially going around. This patent filing of Xiaomi’s experimental phone was spotted by 91mobiles.

Xiaomi detachable phone patent
  • Xiaomi patents foldable smartphone in CNIPA.
  • The patent filing has sketches of the design of the phone and its detachable mechanism.
  • In the unfolded form, it resembles a regular clamshell foldable where the screen is folded in the middle. From certain diagrams, however, it seems the foldable can be detached into two separate parts. The telephone is held together by what appear to be pogo pins.
  • You can even swing the part on top of the folding and maybe use that. How exactly that would actually work, is not yet known.

On the inside, this Xiaomi phone takes a tall display wherein the middle part looks pretty much visible. All in all, the design seems more or less like Xiaomi’s MIX Flip foldable smartphone. It does have three sensors and what seems to be an LED flash for the camera design. The power button and volume keys are placed on the right side of the phone. We could also see the USB Type-C port and speaker grille at the bottom.

This patent is still in its infancy, and there’s no guarantee that it will make it to the market yet. But on the whole, it gives us an idea of what their future foldables may look like and what types of designs they are working upon at present.

Honor is also experimenting with a wild futuristic smartphone that can be unfolded in various angles. There is an Honor Phone that has been found to feature some sort of multiple rotating shaft mechanisms, which enable it to open in different ways.
