Trust with China Broken, Current Border Situation Unusual: Army Chief

New Delhi, October 2 (Udaipur Kiran) Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has stated that trust with China has been broken, describing the current situation at the border as stable but unusual. He emphasized that the situation will remain sensitive until the conditions of April 2020 are restored, and the Indian Army is fully prepared to handle any eventuality.

General Dwivedi made these remarks on Tuesday while addressing the curtain-raiser event for the Chanakya Defence Dialogue at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi. The Indian Army is set to host the second edition of its flagship event, Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2024, on October 24-25, in collaboration with the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS). The theme of this event is “Catalyst for Nation Building: Promoting Development through Comprehensive Security.” During the event, General Dwivedi noted that China has been a significant concern for India. He remarked that dealing with China involves competition, cooperation, coexistence, confrontation, and conflict.

The Army Chief also shed light on the Indian Army’s vision for a strong, secure, and prosperous India by 2047. He shared his thoughts on various national and global security issues and discussed the Indian Army’s contribution to nation-building. He also spoke on the topic of “Pillars of Security: Strengthening India’s Path to Development by 2047,” highlighting the role of the Indian Armed Forces as security providers on India’s path to development.

General Dwivedi emphasized the need for cooperation between the government, industry, and civil society to tackle emerging challenges. Viewing security as a fundamental pillar of national development, the dialogue underscored the vision of a prosperous and secure India by 2047. It also encouraged active strategies that align security with broader goals of social advancement and sustainable development.

The panel discussion was chaired by the Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani. The session, titled “Safe Nation and Prosperous Future: Linking National Security with Development and Progress,” focused on strategies that create a secure environment and foster development. It underscored the importance of aligning defense initiatives with national prosperity and social progress, considering security as a fundamental pillar in India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Participants in the discussion included Arunachal Pradesh MLA Oken Tayeng, CERT-In Director SS Sharma, renowned strategist Lt. Gen. PR Shankar (Retd.), and Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Madhuri Kanitkar (Retd.). The discussion touched on various topics, including border area development, youth engagement, sports, and women’s empowerment in the context of nation-building.
